9. Telling nuvi Where To Search

Tapping on Near... from the Where to page
Figure 52: Expanding the POI Search Scope

When you search for POI's, the default behavior on the nuvi 760 is to search close to your current location. But what if you want to find a restaurant near your destination address instead? Or a shopping mall along the way to your destination? Tapping on Near... from the Where to? menu allows you to specify where you want to search for a given POI.

My eyes skipped over this button the first few times I used the nuvi, but it's an important feature you'll want to be familiar with.

Telling the nuvi Where to Search
Figure 53: Telling the nuvi Where to Search

The nuvi 760 allows you to specify one of four options for setting the POI search radius:

  • Where I Am Now - Searches for businesses close to your current location
  • A Different City - Searches for businesses in a city (you will be prompted to enter the city name)
  • My Current Route - Searches for businesses along your current planned route (you must be navigating to a destination for this option to be selectable)
  • My Destination - Searches for businesses near your destination address (you must be navigating to a destination for this option to be selectable)

For example, if you wanted to find a restaurant near your destination, you would tap on Where to? -> Near... ->My Destination ->Points of Interest ->Food and so on.

10. Setting the HOME Address

Setting the Home Address
Figure 54: Setting the Home Address

The Home address is a special saved address on the nuvi that provides quick, one-touch access to the address you'll use most often: home.

The first time you tap on Go Home from the Where to? menu, the nuvi 760 will prompt you to input your home address.

Entering a Home Address
Figure 55: Entering a Home Address

The nuvi 760 allows you to enter a street address for the saved "Home" address, store your current location as the Home address (especially handy if your street address isn't located exactly where the map thinks), or pick a recently used address as the Home address.

Once the Home address has been set, it can be changed by tapping on Where to > Favorites > Home > Edit

11. Favorites (Address Book)

Favorites Icon
Figure 56: Finding the Favorites Icon

Garmin calls its address book "Favorites". The list of favorite, or saved, addresses is accessed by tapping on Where to? > Favorites.

Garmin orders the favorite addresses by closeness to your current location. That makes sense if you want to know which favorites are closest to you. However, I find the inability to sort the favorites alphabetically annoying, especially once the favorites list grows into more than just a few addresses.

For example, suppose you save an address for a friend's house under the name "Bob's House", next time you want to drive to Bob's house you'll need to scan the Favorites list until you find the saved entry for "Bob's House", which depending on your current location could be the last entry on the list. I'd like to see Garmin include the ability to sort on proximity OR alphabetically.

12. Creating and Using Routes

Garmin's nuvi 700-series is the first nuvi to support multi-destination routing with route optimization. Many users, myself included, felt the lack of multi-stop routing on previous nuvis was a glaring omission and I'm very pleased to see Garmin has added this feature to the nuvi 760.

The nuvi 760 allows up to 10 Routes to be created and saved.

Accessing the Routes Feature
Figure 57: Accessing the Routes Feature

Creating, editing, and activating routes are all performed via the Routes menu. To access the Routes feature, tap on Where to? > Scroll down to page 2 > Routes.

No routes available. Would you like to create a new route?
Figure 58: First Time Using the Routes Feature

The first time the Routes icon is tapped the nuvi reports that no Routes have been created, and asks if we'd like to create a Route.

Adding Stops to the Route
Figure 59: Adding Stops to the Route

The first step in creating a Route, or multi-stop trip, is adding a starting point. Tap Add New Start Point.

Adding addresses to a route is identical to the process for entering any other type of destination; you can use street addresses, POIs, recently found addresses, saved favorites, intersections, or coordinates as entries on a Route.

Creating the Route
Figure 60: Creating the Route

Tapping on the green plus icon inserts another location to the route, while tapping on the red minus icon removes that location from the route.

Calculating the Route
Figure 61: Calculating the Route

Once all the desired locations have been added to the Route, tapping Next causes the nuvi to calculate the route. Route calculation is quick, taking no more than a few seconds.

Viewing the Route on the Map
Figure 62: Viewing the Route on the Map

Once the route has been calculated, the planned route is displayed on the map. Note that the last location in the Route is marked with a checkered flag. The nuvi also displays the distance and time for the planned Route.

Tap Save to store the Route and make it available for use and/or optimization.

Viewing a Saved Route
Figure 63: Viewing a Saved Route

By default, the nuvi saves Routes using the starting and ending location names. You can rename the Route to something more significant, like "Family Trip To Disney Land", as well as re-order the stops by tapping Edit...

Or, tap the green Go! button to start navigating to the first location in the Route.

Reordering Stops Along A Route
Figure 64: Reordering Stops Along A Route

One of the most significant new features on the nuvi 760 is the ability to "Optimize" routes.

Tapping on Optimally Reorder Points reorders the stops so that you are driving to each location in the most efficient manner. In other words, you're not driving back and forth or in circles, but making the taking the most logical order. This feature is especially helpful for drivers who regularly visit multiple locations in one trip, such as realtors, delivery drivers, and contractors.

You can also manually reorder the locations in a Route by tapping on Manually Reorder Points.

Recalculate allows you to change the route preference to calculate by faster time, shorter distance, or off road.

Tapping Delete erases the Route.

13. Using Coordinates Instead of Street Addresses

Routing to A Set of Coordinates
Figure 65: Routing to A Set of Coordinates

I was pleasantly surprised to see Garmin has included the ability to input a set of longitude/latitude coordinates as a destination address. I find this more useful than you might think. For example, some destinations don't have an official street address and need to be input as a set of coordinates. Routing to coordinates is also useful for Geocaching.

To route to a set of coordinates, tap Where to? on the Main Menu, and then scroll down to see the Coordinates icon, as shown above in figure 65.

Selecting the Coordinates Format

Garmin supports entering coordinates in several different formats.

14. Walking to a Destination

Accessing the Tools Menu
Figure 68: Accessing the Tools Menu

The nuvi 760 can be put into pedestrian mode if you want to use the GPS on foot to walk to a destination. To switch the nuvi into pedestrian mode, tap Tools > Settings > System > Usage Mode > Pedestrian > OK.

Garmin provides three modes to choose from: Automotive, Bicycle, and Pedestrian.

NOTE: The nuvi 760 also has the ability to navigate off road, although that option is annoyingly located in a different menu: Tools > Settings > Navigation > Route Preference > Off Road > OK.
